I'm Dan Monarko.

Marketing Leader and Advisor. Two decades in. Still more interested in people than platforms.

I was a Partner at Smith Brothers Agency, which sold to BarkleyOKRP. After the sale I went on to senior roles at Barkley, including SVP, and held VP and CMO-level roles across consumer, health and wellness, food, financial, and B2B brands.

Most of that time went to CPG: food, nutrition, pet, and confectionery brands, from challengers to established names. Big budgets, big brands, big machinery.

I came up in a partner-owned agency, and I still believe the best marketing comes from small, senior teams who are close to the client's business and accountable for the result, not from layers of process designed to protect margin. I also believe that handing your targeting to a black box and hoping it finds your customer is not a strategy. It's a shrug.

I still consult directly for a handful of brands I love, because I like being close to the numbers and the owners who live with them.

What I believe

  1. People first, platforms second. Start with what moves the buyer. Then choose the channel.
  2. Fix the measurement before you fix the media. Bad data makes good programs look broken and broken programs look good.
  3. Simplify, then amplify. Find the one true thing about the brand. Say it clearly. Then put real weight behind it.
  4. AI is a tool, not judgment. It should make smart people faster, not make decisions nobody can explain.
  5. Independent beats bloated. Senior people doing the work beats junior people executing a template.

Off the clock

I own VRM Strength & Fitness, a small group strength gym in Valencia, Pennsylvania, where I also run youth athletic development programs. Coaching teaches you the same lesson marketing does. Nobody changes because you showed them a chart. They change because they trust you and they can see themselves getting there.

Also: golf, my wife Melissa, and dogs who think they run the house.
